Cecil’s Big Band On Blogging

I just got back from a rehearsal with Diane Mosers’ Composer’s Big Band where we rehearsed the music of Ed Xiques who plays lead alto with her band. Great player, super guy, nice section leader. His music is some of the most rhythmically satisfying writing I’ve ever had the pleasure to have played. Every-other bar seems to yield an internal “Ah-Ha!” or “Oh Yeah?” without ever being cute or contrived. No rhythmic gimmicks here.

Diane had a great band assembled (as usual) with Scott Neuman on drums, Andy Euhlau on bass. They’re playing tomorrow night at Trumpet’s with their regular tenor player, Rob Middleton, on the gig. I just subbed for the rehearsal. (I’ll be out chasing my kids who will be dressed in costumes begging for candy.)

Diane’s band is one of the wonderful bands that I’ve enjoyed playing in as I’ve grown in my big-band pursuits (see last nights post) . Her band was also the first bands I played in after moving out to New Jersey nine years ago. Through the band I’ve met some of my best NJ friends including Tom Colao, Marty Fogel and Ben Williams. Diane is also my son’s piano teacher and a great spirit I learn from in every encounter.

Enjoyed reading it, Mike. You’ve got to hand it to Diane. She’s really done a great job keeping the big band together , growing and constantly improving for something close to 10 years now. Also for giving us writers a forum to get our stuff performed. Another great thing about the band is that Diane doesn’t stand still with her musical choices for the band…. there’s always surprises there! Don’t know if Marty’s going to be so happy with your picture of him, though…..

Thanks – Diane is a musician with a ton of vision. I dig Marty’s picture that’s why I stuck it up there! The Motion in the background was too good to pass up. I put it up even though I didn’t have enough text to wrap around it.
