Much of my professional energy these days is spent teaching music. I teach privately at my home throughout the year. I teach Saturday improvisation classes for the Montclair State University Preparatory Department and beginning this fall (2009) I will be teaching jazz ensemble for the Jazz House Kids organization at their brand new facility. I also teach over the summer at Birch Creek Music Center in Wisconsin and for JazzConnections Summer Jazz Workshop at Montclair State University.
I’ve had the good fortune of teaching some extraordinary young musicians, who have gone on to attend some of the top music schools in the country on full or partial scholarships. Currently, former students of mine are attending The New England Conservatory, Manhattan School of Music and The University of Miami, among others.
Teaching music has become, by financial necessity, a part of every jazz musician’s career. But it’s more than a chore. It’s part of the very grand tradition that jazz represents. It is truly an honor to work with students, to show them how small amounts of work done consistently over long periods of time can reap huge rewards. As jazz musicians, it is part of our calling to “spread the word” and expand the appreciation and the audience for this wonderful American artform.
